Bread and flour to be fortified with folic acid to prevent birth defects
New legislation has been introduced that will help prevent around 200 cases of brain and spine defects in babies each year in the UK by fortifying non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid.
The legislation requires millers and flour producers in the UK to fortify non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid by the end of 2026.
Minister praises innovative spina bifida service “helping disabled young people grow”
Natalie Don, Minister for Children, Young People and the Promise visited the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh on Wednesday to find out more about a project run by NHS Lothian and Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus (SBH) Scotland.
NHS Lothian’s Spina Bifida Transition Clinic, delivered in partnership with SBH Scotland, brings together all the services needed to enable a young person’s transition from paediatric to adult care and facilitate wider support with transition into adulthood. The Transition Clinic is the only fully integrated clinic of its kind for people with spina bifida in Scotland.
SBH Scotland surprises shoppers with flashmob on Burns Day
A Burns inspired charity flash mob surprised shoppers on the 25th January at St. Enoch Centre in Glasgow. Organised by Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus (SBH) Scotland, the lively celebration paid homage to the great Scottish bard Robert Burns, while raising awareness for the charity’s vital cause.
Kick-starting the Burns Night celebrations, students from Theatre College of Scotland performed a medley of traditional Scottish songs including Caledonia and Flower of Scotland to delighted onlookers whilst SBH Scotland representatives collected donations from generous shoppers. Families who are supported by the specialist charity were also in attendance to join in the fun.

Family Fundraising Event Raises a Staggering £21,000

In Utero Surgery for Spina Bifida
News broke last week of the first Scottish pregnancy to undergo the in utero fetal surgery for spina bifida. But what is this surgery and what does it involve?
When a baby is born with spina bifida their spinal cord is exposed and babies are operated on immediately to close the lesion. However, with the in utero fetal surgery, this operation takes place much earlier.
New stats reveal 91% of UK women have insufficient folate levels to support a reduction in neural tube defects
A study carried out on behalf of Public Health England and the Food Standards Agency which has been published today (16 March 2018), has revealed as many as 91% of women of childbearing age (16 – 49) in the UK are at increased risk of a neural tube defect (NTD) affected pregnancy due to a folic acid deficiency.
UK Government urged to add folic acid to flour after new study
A study published in Public Health Reviews has revealed previous data showing the set upper limit of folate was flawed. The experts involved are now urging the Department of Health to approve the fortification of flour with folic acid in order to help reduce neural tube defects (NTD), such as spina bifida, in unborn babies.
Aberdeenshire School Initiative Wins at National Awards
Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland’s work with Dalespark Primary School in Peterhead has seen it crowned winner of the ‘Education Partnership’ Award at the ScottishPower Foundation Awards in Glasgow last night (7 Nov).
Continence Information Day
SBH Scotland are holding a ‘Continence Information Day’ on Wednesday the 25th of October 2017. It will be at The Dan Young Building from 2pm-7pm and you can drop-in at any time. The session is open to anyone looking for continence advice.

Millions of people in Europe with disabilities are still excluded from using basic products and services that are taken for granted by others such as withdrawing money from an ATM, entering a bank, a school, a university or any public building, using the underground etc. Europe needs a strong and ambitious European Accessibility Act but currently it's under threat!
CBE for SBH Scotland Chair, Dr Margo Whiteford
Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland are delighted to announce that their Chairperson, Dr Margo Whiteford, has been awarded the title of CBE (Commander of the British Empire) as part of the 2017 New Year’s Honours List for her services to charity and health.
Baby Bella inspires family to raise £1,500 in Kiltwalk
A Banchory dad, whose three-month old baby daughter, Bella, has spina bifida and hydrocephalus, is part of a team which raised nearly £1,500 for our specialist charity to help other babies with the same condition.
