Baby Bella inspires family to raise £1,500 in Kiltwalk
A Banchory dad, whose three-month old baby daughter, Bella, has spina bifida and hydrocephalus, is part of a team which raised nearly £1,500 for our specialist charity to help other babies with the same condition.
Martin McDonald, along with Bella's aunt and uncle, Anna and Grant, were sponsored to complete the 26-mile walk Aberdeen Kiltwalk from Duthie Park to Portach Green.
Spina Bifida occurs early in pregnancy and Martin’s daughter Bella was born in April with the condition which led to two operations in her first week of life, one to close the hole in her back, and one to fit a medical device to drain fluid which had built up in her brain as a result of Hydrocephalus.
Bella’s parents now attend family group sessions organised by SBH Scotland in Aberdeen and even before she was born, the charity visited the McDonalds to give them support and introduce them to another family whose child has the same condition.
Abigail McDonald, Bella’s mother said: “I am so very proud of my husband Martin, sister Anna and Grant for doing the 26-mile Kiltwalk for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland and for raising such a fantastic sum of money in the process.
“I am honoured that they all decided to do the Kiltwalk in aid of our beautiful daughter Bella, who despite what she's been through is a happy, beautiful girl who loves her cuddles!
“It's been an emotional rollercoaster but with the support of the Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland team, I feel I have support every step of the way. Well done to everyone who did the Kiltwalk and raised so much money for so many great charities.”
Deborah Roe, fundraising director at SBH Scotland said; “Martin, Anna, Grant and everyone that supported them should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved. The fantastic amount of money they’ve raised will go a long way in helping us to keep offering vital support to those affected by the condition. I hope their feet aren’t too sore, but they can rest assured that every step of those 26 gruelling miles was worth it.”
