Amazing Burns Night raises £85,000 for SBH Scotland
Scotland’s corporate community was out in force at Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland’s annual “A Question of Burns” supper, now in its 32nd year, raising £85,000 for the specialist charity.
420 guests gathered at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel on the 25 January to celebrate the life and work of the famous Scottish Bard with an evening of poetry, performances and a traditional Burns feast.
Former Scottish international rugby player and sports presenter Andy Nicol hosted the evening, with co-host Ella Chambers, which saw guests enjoy renditions of Burns’ famous poems, a three-course meal, auction and a quiz on all things Rabbie Burns.
Other notable faces in attendance included Kevin Brown with his 'Address to a Haggis’, Scottish actor (Still Game) comedian and writer Sanjeev Kohli, gave the Toast to the Lassies whilst Joyce Falconer (River City) gave the Reply on Behalf of the Lassies.
Question of Burns raises £50,000
It was finally back for it's 30th 'in person' event on the 25th January and our “A Question of Burns” was still as popular as ever, raising £50,000.
Nearly 500 guests gathered at the newly refurbished ballroom of the Glasgow Hilton Hotel, to celebrate the life and work of the famous Scottish Bard with an evening of poetry, performances and a traditional Burns feast.
Former Scottish international rugby player and sports presenter Andy Nicol hosted the evening which saw guests enjoy renditions of Burns’ famous poems, a three-course meal, auction and a quiz on all things Rabbie Burns.
Other notable faces in attendance included Kevin Brown who delivered an Address to the Haggis, legendary comedian Fred MacAulay who gave the Toast to the Lassies and Scottish singer, Michelle McManus, who delivered a hilarious reply.
Scotland’s foremost Robert Burns re-enactor, Chris Tait, delivered the Immortal Memory and award-winning classical singer, and SBH Scotland ambassador, Nicola Cassells, concluded the evening with an emotive performance of Auld Lang Syne.
For over three decades, SBH Scotland’s annual evening in honour of the Ayrshire-born poet has been one of Glasgow’s most successful Burns supper events. Since its launch in 1981, the event has raised over £1 million which has been used to provide personalised support to thousands of children, young people and adults across Scotland affected by the lifelong, complex conditions of spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.
To support the charity in raising the all-important funds, Scotland’s luxury jeweller Chisholm Hunter donated a beautiful Diamond Cluster and 18ct White Gold Pendant worth £2000 for the Diamond Draw, as well as 10 designer Hugo Boss watches for each member of the winning quiz team and some luxury jewellery goody bags.
As Scotland’s only charity providing support to those with these conditions, and with little financial assistance from statutory sources, SBH Scotland relies heavily on fundraising activities to deliver its vital services.
Dr Margo Whiteford CBE, Chairperson of SBH Scotland, said: “Our annual ‘Question of Burns’ supper is a highly anticipated event in our calendar each year. It was really devasting to have to postpone it last minute last year, so we were absolutely delighted to bring it back ‘in person’ for one of our biggest celebrations yet.
“Without the generosity from everyone who attended, we wouldn’t be able to provide specialist services to the 4,000 children, young people and their families who live with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus in Scotland.
“I would like to thank everyone who attended and generously gave including our headline sponsors, Chisholm Hunter, whose continued support of this event has been so crucial in building our Burns event to the level it is today. Because of our guests, speakers, volunteers and sponsors we have certainly kicked off 2023 in a spectacular way.”

SBH Scotland set to host World's Biggest Burns online
Specialist charity, Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland (SBH Scotland) is joining forces with international superstar Fran Healy, as well as Scottish comedians Janey Godley and Fred MacAulay to host the world’s biggest virtual Burns supper for FREE on Monday 25th January at 7pm.
The charity is working with partners across the globe to bring the virtual experience to as many people as possible. The world’s largest ever ‘in person’ Burns supper had 900 guests, and SBH Scotland hope that through the power of digital technology they will reach many more.
Although online, viewers can expect all the trimmings of a traditional Burns evening. The Address to a Haggis will feature alongside the main tribute to Burns, the Immortal Memory, recited by Comedian Bruce Fummey. Funny-man, and host of the event, Fred MacAulay, delivers the Toast to the Lassies as Janey Godley, who became a social media sensation after creating parody videos of Nicola Sturgeon during lockdown, will then give the reply.
Janey Godley said: “Scotland might be back in lockdown, but that shouldn’t stop us from celebrating the life of one of our greatest ever treasures. We have some fantastic acts lined up who will be bringing some much needed cheer during these difficult times, all while raising vital funds for a very important cause.
“The event is free to attend and I am looking forward to joining my fellow Scots around the globe for what we hope will be the world’s biggest Burns Supper.”
Travis front-man Fran Healy will perform Auld Lang Syne, while Scotland’s foremost Robert Burns re-enactor, Christopher Tait, will recite Tam o’Shanter. Other famous faces have also sent in their own Burns contributions!
The virtual event, which has only been made possible through the support of Scottish businesses Grant’s Haggis, Endura Cycle Apparel and Chisholm Hunter, is free to attend, with donations encouraged through the silent auction and raffle. The event is also supported by EventScotland through Scotland’s Events Recovery Fund.
Deborah Roe, SBH Scotland Director of Fundraising said: “2020 was a difficult year for everyone, but it was particularly challenging for those already in need. Our organisation, like many others in the third sector, has seen a significant drop in fundraising. We need support now more than ever and hope that this exciting new event will help raise vital funds for our charity.”
SBH Scotland’s 2021 Burns event will go live at 7pm on Monday 25 January 2021 on its YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/ScottishSpinaBifida and Facebook channel www.facebook.com/SBHScotland/ The pre-recorded programme will also be available to view for one week.
